It almost goes w/o saying, actually. I LOVE roller derby! A lot of people ask me, 'why roller derby?' Well, I'll tell ya. A couple of years ago, I was sitting down for a tattoo and talking w/ my tattoo guy (Jason) about writing and stuff (stuff being boobs). At that point, I had just written three books in a very short period of time and was kind of burnt out on my characters. I was looking for a new pool to swim in, so to speak. Boobs got us on the subject of roller derby (apparently nobody loves boobs, or talking about boobs more than rollergirls-really). So, I was intrigued by this bunch and started to do some research. This is where I met La Muerta (my favorite brunch buddy) and Ginjure Scraps. As my research continued, I met more girls and really started to love this community. It wasn't until I saw my first bout that I fell in love with the sport. The first bout that I saw was flat track, actually and it as the Texas Rollergirls Championship. This was funny b/c I knew the rules on banked track and the flat track rules are a little different...and their evening's events are set up quite different as well. I met Lucky Harm there and we tried to decipher some of the rules, but we did run into Miss Conduct and she explained everything. My excitement for derby kinda lessened b/c I didn't know what was going on half the time, and by that time, I had already started Derby Gal. I think that was in August of '06...October rolls around and I go the TXRD's Cornucopia of Death. Wow, that kickstarted my heart.
Derby is the center of my universe...and I'm not even skating for a league yet. I went all the way out to the desert (Tucson, AZ) to see the flat track Western Conference Championships, otherwise known as the Dust Devil. That was completely astounding...there were some truly amazing bouts (and I actually knew the rules, so I wasn't lost!) and I met some really cool girls out there. I also learned that driving in the desert at night SUCKS! Nationals were in Austin this last September and it was just awesome. Got a chance to meet a few more girls and see some amazing derby.
So, that's pretty much my post for today...I'm working on the Cowgirlie website and hope to have it done by the end of the day.
